Jumbo Saggar Fired Box

These boxes are wheel thrown, and then treated with terra sigillata, a slip made of fine particles that give color and shine. After the bisque firing they are fired in a saggar (a refractory container that withstands high temperatures) with sawdust, organic combustibles, and metal salts to achieve flashes of color, dark carbon marks, and areas of resist. I play with these variables to produce pattern, line, and imagery on the surfaces. These boxes are for dry non-food storage only, to clean simply give it a quick rinse and buff with a soft cloth.
